SPACEQUAKES RUMBLES NEAR EARTH

highercalling88.com Researchers using NASA's fleet of five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a form of space weather that packs the punch of an earthquake and plays a key role in sparking bright Northern Lights. They call it "the spacequake." A spacequake is a temblor in Earth's magnetic field. It is felt most strongly in Earth orbit, but is not exclusive to space. The effects can reach all the way down to the surface of Earth itself. "Magnetic reverberations have been detected at ground stations all around the globe, much like seismic detectors measure a large earthquake," says THEMIS principal investigator Vassilis Angelopoulos of UCLA. It's an apt analogy because "the total energy in a spacequake can rival that of a magnitude 5 or 6 earthquake," according to Evgeny Panov of the Space Research Institute in Austria. Panov is first author of a paper reporting the results in the April 2010 issue of Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). In 2007, THEMIS discovered the precursors of spacequakes. The action begins in Earth's magnetic tail, which is stretched out like a windsock by the million mph solar wind. Sometimes the tail can become so stretched and tension-filled, it snaps back like an over-torqued rubber band. Solar wind plasma trapped in the tail hurtles toward Earth. On more than one occasion, the five THEMIS spacecraft were in the line of fire when these "plasma jets" swept by. Clearly, the jets were going to hit Earth. But what would happen then? The fleet moved ...

Where to Mount a Carbon Monoxide Detector

!9# Where to Mount a Carbon Monoxide Detector

[if ]

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a silent killer and is a lethal gas that is all too often present in high volume within our homes. Opinions vary regarding the best place to mount a carbon monoxide detector. It may seem logical to simply plug-in your CO detector at the nearest power source available, namely a floor level wall socket, but ground level is going to be the wrong answer. Choosing an inefficient or ineffective location to mount a carbon monoxide detector is a common mistake many home owners often make. Here are a few simple things to keep in mind to keep your household safe from the dangers of CO poisoning.

The chemical properties of CO are such that it is slightly lighter than air, meaning in a stable environment with little cross-breeze CO will generally collect from the top down in a closed room. For this reason the first thing to consider when you mount a carbon monoxide detector is relative height compared to ground level. The best bet is to mount your carbon monoxide detector on the ceiling just like you would with a typical smoke detector.

Keep your CO detector mounted away from bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any other area that gets more humid than the rest of the house. Humidity interferes with the internal working of most CO detectors. Also be sure to mount a carbon monoxide detector at between ten to twelve feet away from any gas power appliances or cooking devices. Having a carbon monoxide detector mounted near these areas may give a false positive alarm and cause undue wear-and-tear to your device, not to mention wear-an-tear on your nerves. Garages are also another source of many false alarms automobiles moving in and out and laundry appliances usually installed here. Garages are often too cold for proper operation in areas of the country that experience extended cold temperatures.

No matter how big or small your home may be, it is always best to install more than one device in the event either one fails to successfully alarm if CO reaches dangerous levels. A good general guideline is to have one device per level of your home, including the basement, or no less than two devices in a one-story dwelling. Always mount CO detectors near bedrooms or areas where you may often sleep, like family rooms or lounge areas. The idea here is to get woken up when the alarm sounds.

When you mount your carbon monoxide detector, take your time and think about how CO is likely to accumulate within your home. Also be mindful of where placement will most likely alert you if the danger threshold is reached. With these things in mind your family will sleep safe from the dangers of CO poisoning.

Starting Your Own Construction Company

!9# Starting Your Own Construction Company

[if ]

If you have been working for some years in the construction business, you may have the desire to start your own construction company. However, the first consideration is what kind of construction have you been involved in? If you have been working for a large company doing specific niche tasks over and over, you may not be ready to start your own business. To start a construction company or to become a self employed construction superintendent, you will have to have a good understanding and experience in being part of all the pieces of a structure coming together. Consequently, it's a good idea, even if you've been working in a large company to be sure to get some experience in a smaller company that gives you more well rounded experience with all the factors in building a structure.

People become building contractors because they want to advance financially in a profession that involves the trade and work they have done, finding it rewarding and satisfying. And unless they decide to only work on one comparably small job at a time, they will likely have to give up most of the hands on work they have done for years in favor of spending their time on the particulars of what is required to run a contracting business. Having to oversee all of the factors to bring together their, or someone else's job as a construction superintendent, they will not have time to put their hand to tools, boards, and metal. They will be too busy hiring and dismissing employees, delivering supplies, writing and ensuring contracts, obtaining licenses, meeting government requirements, and on and on it goes.

Bringing construction projects in on time, coming in on the customer's or company's budget, and finishing with a profit are the three factors that determine a contractor's success. And since these are the factors that determine whether a contracting business succeeds or fails, it is wise for a self employed contractor to put his or her focus on the big picture of the business rather than the physical details of individual jobs.

However, there are many skills necessary to bring together a construction project successfully. And it is in using those skills to bring together all the pieces of the puzzle, there is a great deal of satisfaction for most self employed building contractors in knowing that using those skills has accomplished a profitable project.

A building contractor now has the satisfaction of hiring good people, coordinating all the labor, strategically using sub-contractors, and making the job come together. Many former tradespeople turned contractors find even greater satisfaction in their new role once they find out how enjoyable it is making a structure come together through their knowledge and experience.

In the past, the natural progression from someone working in the building industry for years to self employed contractor was a rational one, that they could be prepared for on the job. However, today, with the complexity of modern construction techniques, higher education degrees and certification in related fields is advisable and for some jobs essential. Those who have well rounded experience on the job and have furthered their education through college degrees are well ahead of the game of becoming a construction contractor.

!9# What is a carbon monoxide detector?

A carbon monoxide detector, commonly referred to as a CO detector is an electronic device that detects the presence of carbon monoxide in the air. It is an odorless and colorless compound produced by incomplete combustion, and increased exposure can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and death. Virtually undetectable by human senses of even small concentrations of hazardous and noxious substances for long periods of time.

Since it is colorless, tasteless and odorless. AsThus, the evidence in the home environment is not possible without an alarm. A poisonous gas that circulates faster than oxygen, resulting in less oxygen to various organs of the body of a person. Thus, the risk of inhalation of carbon monoxide unaware that many countries with federal laws and regulations that prohibit any building constructed without adequate initiated a reliable CO detectors and alarms in place.

The detectors are made to measureThe levels of carbon monoxide over time. Most are equipped with an alarm system that, when it accumulates an abnormal CO in the region, causing capabilities. In this way, people with a reasonable time to evacuate the premises. Some devices even to emergency services when the alarm is activated.

A detector is sometimes confused with smoke detectors, but they serve a function completely different. Smoke detectors alert people to the presence of a fire without flame, an alarm and detectorthe people of the unseen danger of carbon monoxide build-up caused by a malfunction of a device to warn. At home, are sources of space heating and water, blocked chimneys, flames, or a car left running in a garage.

Since it is the same density as air, the device can be placed near the ceiling or floor. However, each manufacturer has a favorite location for their equipment and the installation instructions before using the detector to read. Devicesare widely available online and in stores. They are usually battery or mains operation, although most have a battery backup in case of power failure. New technology advances, many detectors and alarm systems saw increased battery life of up to seven years, more than triple the duration, as detectors have been introduced on the market. The gas sensor alarms and a limited period, usually two to five years. Similar to smokingDetectors, the devices are usually with a test button, battery equipped to determine the viability, but not the sensor circuit. The sensor can be tested with an external source gas, and should be performed every year.

A carbon monoxide detector can also be a fire alarm system or be integrated with and controlled by a central facility. These have the added advantage that it directly to an external monitoring station, as well as an alarm system can alert the emergency properly wiredServices, while the occupants slept. Since carbon monoxide is a silent, toxic harmful even in small doses can be a good detector can provide the comfort and safety, and units at home are fine. More importantly, as a deadly poison and secret, may be guaranteed with a CO detector in the house that the occupants 'health' is not compromised in the short and long term.
